My First College Dorm Experience

My introduction to the freshman dorm was nothing out of the ordinary. There were thousands of students, just like me, who were being dropped off by their parents with their belongings. I was not going to be facing this challenge alone. I was also confident in my preparation having performed at a high level in my college exams and prep classes. Nevertheless, I remained anxious about facing this more competitive environment on my own.

For a diversion, I brought along my alvarez acoustic guitar. This was my little baby. I enjoyed playing the guitar to relieve stress and to also stimulate the right hemisphere of the brain. The classes and study groups did more than their part to exercise my left hemisphere.

I also selected to maintain a collection of scrapbook pages of this time. It would provide a documentary of sorts of my experiences in college. It was also a way to mark my progress. The idea was presented to me by my parents who each kept their own scrapbooks. They showed me their books, and it helped give me a valuable perspective.

In order to help me survive on my own, my mother thought it would be wise to do some cooking every now and again in order to avoid the pervasive junk food diet. I did not want to fall into the trap of the freshman forty and gain weight as so many are apt to. Although I did have a meal plan, there is a tendency to over eat when faced with a multitude of eating choices. In order to provide a healthy substitute, my mom packed an anodized cookware set.

The rest of my luggage was primarily filled with clothes. There were summer clothes, winter clothes, and everything in between. The remainder was comprised of books, sound system, computer, and miscellaneous sports equipment. I enjoyed being physically active, particularly, playing football, basketball, and even throwing a frisbee now and again.

As I entered the doorway of my dorm room, I was amazed at how small it appeared. The closet was very small in stature. Clearly, there was not enough space to store or place all my belongings. I had to purchase some furniture. There was a bed, a mattress, and a wooden desk. I would need to purchase some accessories to furnish the room.

The most startling part of the freshman dorm experience is the communal bath. The showers and bathroom are not only communal but also coed. I was expected to grow not only intellectually but also socially. However, I was looking forward to the challenge.
