i do not know how to work out the problem i started it a couple times but i am getting nowhere
You know the linear speed and the mass of the ball so you know the translational kinetic energy, Kt
Kt = 1/2 mv^2 = 50.54 J
Now to get he rotational energy Kr, you need the moment of inertia of a solid sphere taken aroun its center, and the rotational speed of the ball.
The moment of intertia is probably in a table in you text. I looked it up in mine and found:
I = 2mR^2/5 R = radius of sphere
The rotational speed w, can be found from the linear speed v by
w = v/R
Then Kr = 1/2 Iw^2 = mR^2/5 (v/R)^2 = 1/5 mv^2 = 20.22 J
