Varieties Of Hand Saws - ToolsRUs
Today's hand saws may be all-purpose of very particular in terms of use, and they are distinguished by their shape, length, teeth per inch and appropriate method for cutting. Woodworkers of all types, from luthiers and toy makers to furniture craftsmen appreciate a good hand saw. Electric saws may be fast and convenient, great for cranking out cuts quickly, but hand saws are still used because they are accurate and make extremely clean cuts.

Two of the most basic types of hand saws are the cross-cut and the rip varieties. Their design features a comfortable wood or fiberglass handle affixed to a lengthy and flexible blade that narrows as it moves away from the handle. Cross-cut saws have knife-like teeth and are designed to cut against the grain of wood. Rip saws rip wood, another way of saying cutting with the grain. Both of these hand saws come in different lengths and thicknesses and typically feature anywhere from 7 to 12 teeth per inch (TPI). Commonly around twenty inches in length, both types work well for all-purpose hand-cutting applications.
Carcass saws are specialty tools that feature a rectangular blade, a higher number of teeth per inch and are good for making shoulder cuts. Other saws for making very specific cuts when joining wood include tenon and dovetail saws. These saw types resemble a carcass saw in their basic shape, but they make cleaner cuts since they have even more teeth per inch. Another specialty tool, called a coping saw, features a small, tube-like handle attached to a U-shaped metal bracket, between the ends of which is a thin blade. They have very fine teeth and are used to make small, precise cuts such as are needed when making toys, jewelry or wood carvings.
Other tools commonly used for specific tasks include curved inlay saws, backsaws, metal-cutting hacksaws, floorboard saws, a variety of pruning saws and keyhole saws. Many carpenters value the quality, cutting ability and precision of numerous kinds of Japanese saws. You identify a Japanese saw by its long, straight, wood handle attached to its blade in line. From making rough timber cuts to fine dovetail and other precise cuts, there are Japanese saws of many kinds. These exotic tools cut on the backstroke as you pull it towards you, similar to other kinds of saws. By contrast, some saws cut on each forward or push stroke.
