STRESSED AND OVERWEIGHT – ARE WE KILLING OURSELVES?
Hands up if you have weight to lose. Put your hand up if you’ve ever been on a diet – which hasn’t worked. If you’re feeling stressed – hands up. Put your hand up if you want a change in lifestyle. And if you’ve ever thought about making a change, but haven’t had the willpower to carry it through – put your hand up.
If your hand is up – you’re in the majority! For most people, there’s the will to change – but not the way. And that’s one of the key drivers of growth of the worldwide life coaching industry, because people WANT to change their lives, but they realise they can’t do it alone.
Weight problems and stress management are two areas that feature regularly on the agendas of life coaches. Researchers estimate that over half of doctor’s visits are caused by stress-related complaints. Medical problems including heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, insomnia, skin disorders, depression, weakness in the immune system and chronic pain have all been linked to stress – and it’s a major cause of problems in the workplace too. It is said that stress is the cause of 60 per cent of accidents in the workplace and 19% of employee absenteeism.
In Australia for example, employees falling sick from work-related stress costs the economy over $14 billion dollars annually, with the average employee in Australia off work for 3.2 days a year because they’re too stressed to function properly . The issue of stress is of real concern to employers and the authorities, and it is clearly very damaging to the economy, to productivity and to people’s health.
The same can be said for issues relating to weight. The world is growing – with obesity on the increase (even in traditionally ‘slim’ areas such as China which is estimated to have over 100 million of its people tipping the obesity scale). Obesity statistics in developed countries like the US, the UK and Australia (where 62% of adults are overweight) are also staggering, reaching epidemic proportions and also threatening the health and life expectancy of millions of people.
Of course, these are issues of national significance that governments, health authorities and employers worldwide are addressing. But on an individual scale, how can a person make real and lasting changes? Perth corporate coach and industry specialist, Derek Haayema, believes everybody is capable of change . He has coached several state sports teams to success and uses sporting analogies to help people bring passion, habit, persistence and happiness to their workplace and to their personal lives.
Where many of his clients have failed to make changes by themselves – notably in terms of diet, lifestyle, stress management and overcoming obstacles – they’ve had success in achieving their goals when working with a coach. It’s a formula that has been recognised by employers worldwide, who have invested in coaches and coaching techniques to assist their employees overcome obstacles, manage stress and change attitudes to become more productive.
Some of the positive outcomes of coaching include increased clarity of short, medium and long-term visions, ability to identify and prepare for obstacles, ability to tackle challenges with focus, resolve and commitment, ability to identify strengths and weaknesses and ability to set goals in achievable timeframes.
There’s little doubt that obesity and stress are major global issues – one just has to consider that people in the US spend nearly 60 billion dollars a year on weight loss products and services, which only have a five per cent success rate. Calling for help from an executive coach in managing these health and productivity issues may seem like a drop in the ocean on a global scale – it is possible to change the world by taking one small step at a time.
