Can you use plaster of paris bought at a home improvement store for art/casting/etc.?
I need to make a golf putter out of ceramic and I need to make a mold to pour the slip in. Can I use plaster of paris bought at like home depot or lowe's to make that mold? I can't think of any arts & crafts stores near me. Also, is there a noticeable price difference if I bought it at the two different types of stores (arts vs. home improvement)?
It is a question of quality when deciding which plaster to get, going from the finest dental plaster which sets very fast, to the coarser building grade plaster. Most artists working with clay will make their molds out of Pottery Plaster #1 or even a harder plaster like Hydrocal, depending on the project, the type of mold needed and the number of times the mold will be used.
One of the most important things with plaster is to use fresh plaster. A bag of plaster that's been sitting around for a while and open to the air will absorb moisture and not make a strong mold.
