Hybrid 4 or 5 iron? Which one and why?
A local sporting good store has some good deals on some hybrids. I want to pick one up to have in my bag as a rescue club or for shots out of the rough. All they have left are 4 (22 degrees) and 5 (25 degrees) hybrids. I hit my 5 wood very well (19 deg), and am pretty good with my 3 and 4 irons. So, which club of the two available would you recommend going with and why?
4 hybrid.
If you hit your 5 well, then 4 should be the choice!
Normally you go longer to shorter with the hybrids. You swap 3 iron for a 3 hybrid, 4 iron for hybrid, etc.
So the logical choice would be 4 hybrid. You'll probably get more distance too if you hit your 4 iron well. So if you get a 5 hybrid you'll be overlapping on clubs.
I tend to hit hybrids 5-10 yards further and although I like my 5 iron, I just recently swapped it out for a hybrid. Makes life easier from tougher lies and lands softer on the green too!
Hybrids are great 3 in one club too! From using it to putt with 10 yards of fringe between you and the green, to hitting out of fairway bunkers without worrying about catching too much sand. And of course, it's an easier club to hit than an iron. 3 clubs in 1! I wouldn't try to run a ball to the green on the fringe with a 5 iron. Nor would I try to pop it out of a sand bunker to the green 175 yards away. But I'd pull out a hybrid in the sand bunker and feel more confident with that shot!
Golf Digest once had an article that said for every hybrid you have in your bag reduce your score by 1!
