Has any private individual contacted a university to see if a degree by a student was forged [UCLA]?
I know of a person who forged a UCLA degree in order to get a teaching position abroad. Will a university divulge information regarding a student's graduation and degree status? Must such a request come from a company or can a private citizen request such information? Seems like some times it is the perpetrators who are protected.
It is a "matter of public record" whether a person attended and whether they received a degree from a university. The college can divulge that information to anyone it wishes. It is a private matter what courses the person took and what grades he got. That cannot be divulged without a written request from the individual.
I graduated from a famous college. When I went back to the alumni reunion I happened to speak to the Registrar and I asked him about this. He said they receive many calls per day to verify that someone attended the university - they can give the dates the person attended and say that they recieved a degree. And about once a day they get a call asking about someone who claimed to attend, but who in fact never was a student there.
