Why do some fibers shrink when you wash and dry it?
100% wool, for example, cannot be machine washed and machined dried.
I want to the know the science of the shrinking. How does the material change under the washing and drying process.
Natural fibers are protein. Protein changes with heat, as seen in cooking meat or cooking eggs . Heat crinkles up the fiber protein similar to a hair getting a perm, so it is shorter. It is the hot water or heat from the dryer that shrinks wool and cotton.Man made fibers like nylon or polyester are not proteins, so they do not shriink.
