I need help finding what lofts I need for some fairway woods. I have a 13 degree lofted driver and a 4 hybrid
I'm looking to fill in this gap by buying two fairway woods, but I'm not sure if the 3 and 5 wood combo is the best for me because of my highly lofted driver. Any suggestions?
My hybrid is a 22 degree.
The key is to find out what your launch angle is with your driver. It should be about 15 degrees for optimum ball flight and roll out. Many things determine this, the least of which is the loft. The club face loft in drivers has more to do with the amount of spin you put on the ball. Center of gravity in the clubhead, shaft stiffness and kickpoint are the most important to launch angle. A 8.5 degree loft with a low center of gravity and a properly matched shaft will hit the ball higher than a 13 degree loft with different shaft flexes and kick points. It all depends on your swing and swing speed as to what combination of these things you need to maximize your ball flight.
That being said, the idea that you bought a 13 degree driver indicates that you have trouble getting the ball into the air. Fairway woods when properly struck lightly pinch the ball against the ground causing it to roll up the club face and have a higher launch angle. It would seem that you would benefit the most from a 7 wood and a 4 wood with regular flex shafts and low kick points.
The best way is to get yourself fitted at a golf shop which has a driving net and the proper equipment to measure your swing speed and launch angles.
