Americans ... What is a 'sport' coat?
Does this refer to ANY jacket / coat that is waist length? I have seen the term regularly applied to both tailoring (blazers / tweeds) and casual rain jackets / golf windbreakers etc.
Why is the term often used so broadly?
a sport coat is similar to a suit coat. It's tailored and generally has the same cut as a suit coat; but a sport coat designed to be worn by itself (I.E. not with matching dress pants).
Referring to other types of jackets as sport coats is simply an improper use of the word .
