Turnout for in-hand large M&M?
How should horse and handler be presented for an in-hand large mixed M&M class. The horse in question is a bay sec d.
Everything you can think of please as I'm new to showing!
Also, how does the class work - ie what is the format, what would we be expected to do?
Bay section D you need, Beige/light coloured trousers (not white). Shirt, Tiem tie pin. Shoes that you can run in but have lots of grip, I use walking boots.
You can either wear a waistcoat or a tweed jacket.
Put your hair neatly in a bun or net, and wear a hat, for inhand classes the hat can be a hard hat, a beagler, a trilby or a flat cap. I would reccomend a hard hat untill you know how the horse reacts at shows
Horse should be clean, mane neatly pulled to a length of approx 8 inches (can be shorter or longer depending on the neck). White halter.
Polish the coat within an inch of its life and Feathers clean, brushed through and flowing, any white bits chalked.
The class itself, everyone will enter at walk on the right rein, the judge will watch for a while, the steward will stop the class on one corner and you will be asked to individualy trot to the back of the line.
The judge will then pull you into the line up in an order.
You will then be directed to do an individual show. When directed by the steward walk up to the judg and stand your horse up so the judge can see conformation (often D's stand square). Always Say hello or good morning/afternoon to the judge and smile!! when asked to walk your horse in a direct line away from the judge, turn round at the end and trot directly back at the judge (they should get out of the way) then round the back of the line. once you reach a suitable point (end of the line if no more the 8 horses or a similar distance if there is more, come back to walk aknowlege the judge with a nod of the head and return to your space in the line.
Once the judge has seen all the horses you will be asked to walk round again, judge will then pull you in in the final order, award rosettes then you need to do a lap of honor at trot.
ETA (1) Kaz, look at any photographers website and you will find that all the section D's and connemaras and newforests have pulled manes, It makes thier necks look better and provided it is reasonably long (ie not plaiting length) then it is fine. The natural look is actualy a very subtle, careful and painstaking trim and grooming job. It takes me longer to get my M&M's ready then it does to get my show pony ready. At least with the show pony it is just a case of all the hair off and plait the mane (I pull his tail). With my M&M's the beard comes off about 2 weeks before a show so that it has had a small amount of time to settle and look natural. I carefully thin feathers to ensure that they flow correctly and are easy to clean and chalk (and on my connemara so they are not to fluffy). I even very carefully shape the top of the connies tail and with my section D's i feather the bottom of thier tails into a point.
ETA(2) Zakiit you NEVER plait a M&M can certainly not in a running plait at all.
you also always show section D's in white halters except if they are a stallion.
You should never wear jods for an inhand class as it looks very very amaturish.
You will only be asked to walk on one rein in an inhand class, normaly you never do both reins and if a judge asks for both reins i would think the judge doesnt have a clue.
Also a white shirt is not ideal a cream one is better. Ties can be as loud or as subtle as you feel comfortable with. I personaly have a bright red tie with cream dots on and i wear a yellow shirt.
NEVER ever wear white gloves when showing, always brown leather. white gloves are for dressage only.
a black hat is also incorrrect as it should be navy and you can wear a beagler if you choose or a trilby or flat cap.
never black the feet of an M&M and doing it with boot polish will damage the hoof anyway so use the proper hoof black to do it on other horses.
Also the individual show you have given is completely wrong, the judge cant see you trot up in yours as the judge needs to see from behind and infront to check the horse moves straight, you walk away and trot directly back at the judge. then round the back of the line.
