Bored Of Royal Weddings Already? Here, Have Another
The 2011 royal wedding extravaganza really isn't of interest to everyone. But whether or not we're all as truly excited as the the media seems ready to characterise us as being, it isn't going away. The latest news is of course that royal show jumper Zara Phillips has got engaged to rugby star Mike Tindall. Whilst they're looking for Wedding venues in England, the papers are left pondering the question: why now?. From the perspective of someone completely detached from the Royal cult of personality, the marriage of two sports people actually seems more deserving than the eternal happiness of two art history students. Was Phillips trying to steal some thunder? It seems very unlikely, and it certainly wouldn't have worked. If anything, the calculation behind the announcement is surely that 2011 will be a great year to get married away from the kinds of ever prying eyes that are distracted by collectable porcelain.
However, the one thing the announcement most definitely invites are the unpleasant comparisons. Who has the most expensive engagement ring? Who is taking the wedding snaps, and how good are they? The Daily Mirror asks the question on nobody's lips. Kate or Zara, who is 'the most royal'? Will we see a weekend in lavish Castle accommodation or a simply registry office occasion for Zara? The only thought that occurs over this issue is that Zara Phillips cannot possibly care as much for these comparisons as the journalists who write them do. The best thing to come out of the distraction will be the lack of serious headlines over whether Tindall is a suitable match. We are therefore spared the paragraph inches about a grammar school boy's epic climb to the top of the social ladder, because someone prettier scaled those dizzying heights a couple of weeks before him.
Ever since the royal wedding was announced, nobody has been spared the comparisons. Perhaps couples should invite them?. Sick and tired of the attention and family infighting your engagement is causing? So here's a concept: get yourself into a Castle hotel on the weekend of the royal wedding. The most asinine of your relatives will doubtlessly be rended apart by their commitment to non-existant national pride and their family commitments.
