What can merchadise do for your band
What are the benefits of branded merchandise for your band? to proove a point lets take a look at one of last night's Brit award winners.
Iron maiden, The giants of heavy metal won 'best live band' last night. Good to see metal music getting some recognition amongst a sea of terrible indie and pop bands (let the flaming begin!). When they played in london last June, the merch stands were always packed, with people NEEDING their Iron Maiden t-shirt. Here's one of the dirty secrets in the music industy- unless you sell millions of albums, bands dont see alot of money. Most of their money comes from merchandise sales and tour. Maiden and other band such as metallica sell thousands of merchandise at gigs. which given that they bands play staduims and a t-shirt is £20 each, thats a very sweet pie to be munching at. But when they were a smaller band in the late 70's early 80s Before 'Maiden mania' took off merchandise sales were keeping their heads above water. Bands such as the infamous Cannibal Corpse sell merchandise and the gorey and bloody designs that sit proudly on the shirts. You cant expect anything more from a band with an album called 'gallery of suicide'. Merch sales have beenable to let them keep touring for years.
Promotional merchandise can also help get your bands name out there.
People will buy cool looking merchandise to wear/ display, out in public, which will be seen by other people, and if they also like the design/ logo, they may come to a gig or at least check out your myspace page. The more people see your logo, the more they may become interested and try to find you online and may become a fan, purchasing your wares. People will usually buy one copy of the album, but 2 or 3 t-shirts if they like the designs.
