Tony Hayward plays Russian musical chairs
In October Tony Hayward steps down as BP CEO. The Associated Press reports that Robert Dudley is his likely replacement. Hayward was replaced by Dudley as BP's point man for the oil spill response. The board of BP's Russian venture TNK-BP now has a seat for Hayward. Ironically, Dudley once headed TNK-BP and had to flee from Russia in 2008 after he ran afoul of authorities there.
Will Hayward fare better at TK-BP than Dudley?
If Tony Hayward's new post leading BP's partnership with Russian oil barons is indicative, his business still regards him highly, perhaps if most Americans and Americas politicians don't. The TNK-BP venture, as outlined by the Washington Post, is one BP's most essential projects—with 25 percent of its total production. But Robert Dudley's experience proves the post can be a headache. Dudley was forced to leave Russia after a fight with Russian shareholders.
Senators think Hayward bargained terrorists for oil
U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Kirsten Gillibrand want to haul Tony Hayward before Congress, quite possibly though he is stepping down. The New York Observer reports that they senators want to hear from Hayward at a July 29 hearing into the release of the Lockerbie bomber. The British government has been pressured for weeks by the two senators to start investigating whether a BP-Libya oil deal is related to the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdul Baset al-Megrahi. Hayward may have had a role in negotiations with the Libyans during that deal, Menendez said.
