Sick 3 year old dog swollen neck and sneezing?
I have a 3 year old Basset Terrier Mix He started acting slugish about 2 weeks ago. He was very sensative to any touches to his neck area. I brought him into the vet and they took x rays and found nothing and gave him a shot of Cortizone and two sets of pills one for pain and an antibotic. Told me to feed him rice and ground beef so it was easier on him without giving him the runs. I took him on a Thursday so he was still not himself which was expected from the meds but he wasnt getting better either so I called back and brought him in again on Wednesday. This time his neck was really swollen his limpinods are the size of golfballs and his temp has gone up 2 degrees from the last visit. The vet took blood this time and did a blood count to see if it was an infection he also gave me new antibotics (batril? sorry they are at home) that were chewable and more effective. Blood test came back with nothing and now he sneezes all the time... is there anthing I can do? or tests I can ask for?
Baytril is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. If that does not do the trick, it probably is not an infection. It sounds like your vet is doing a pretty decent job with a hard case. If the fever continues, you may want to consider having him hospitalized and given fluids to prevent dehydration and help flush his system.
I would ask about allergies, and allergy testing, although it doesn't necessarily explain the fever. If your vet can't come up with an answer, I would ask him about referring your dog to a specialist. I'm not sure that a 2nd opinion would be beneficial in a case like this, from "just another vet".
If he does think allergies are an option, ask him about trying a low or allergen free diet such as Hill's Z/D.
If you do go for a second opinion, make sure you bring your x-rays and history with you.
I would also invest in a thermometer you can dedicate to your dog, so that if his fever does increase, you will know.
