Lehenga is a skirt which is worn with a choli and duppatta. It also comes in Indian Traditional dress. Lehenga Choli is a very colorful dress which has a lot of mirror and embroidery work.
Lehenga could be very heavy, light or a mix of heavy and light embroidery. A choli comparatively has lighter work than the Lehenga. Similarly a duppatta or a chunri could be made heavy, light or semi heavy. Depending upon the occasion and the region a Lehenga choli is selected and worn.
Varieties of Lehenga choli:
The variety of Lehenga choli varies with region and with occasion. Majorly it can be classified into four types which are as follows:
Ghaghra Choli:
Ghaghra Choli is worn on various occasions but most commonly it is selected for the occasion of marriage. A Ghaghra is a full length skirt from waist to ankles. It is worn with a Choli and a Chunri or duppatta. A Choli is made to cover the chest and the duppatta is to be worn over the chest and the head.
A bridal Lehenga / Ghaghra has a very heavy embroidery and Zari and Resham work on it. It could be made with real gold and silver Zari. To add to its beauty it could have mirror and Buti work on it. And the shape and design of the Lehenga could be selected with a person's personal choice. They are available in various shapes and sizes. For example:

2. Circular Lehenga
3. Mermaid Lehenga
4. Straight cut Lehenga etc…
Except For Bridal Lehenga/Ghaghra which is very heavy there are light and Semi heavy Ghaghra choli also. They are:

Lancha:
A Lancha is a wedding dress for Muslim women. It also has heavy or semi heavy embroidery over it. It is worn with a Choli and a duppatta. The fabric of the Lancha is that of a Satin, Silk, Crepe, Net, Brocade and Chiffon. Now women except Muslim are also opting for Lancha because of the splendid design and contemporary fashion style.
Chaniya Choli:
Chaniya choli is most commonly worn in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Here the Lehenga/ Ghaghra are called as Chaniya. They have a very less embroidery but a lot of mirror work all over the Chaniya and even on Choli. The common Fabrics used in Chaniya Choli are cotton, khadi and silk
Sharara:
Sharara is also worn with a Choli and chunni. It is like wide pants tighten until thighs or sometimes until knees worn with a choli and duppatta. Sharara has a lot of flare towards the ankles. To give it an appropriate flare Sharara is generally made up of silk, satin, brocade and chiffon.
Now here depending upon the choice and the shape fabrics should be chosen for Lehenga choli. The fabric should support the shape, variety and the embroidery work done on the Lehenga Choli. Also it should be such that it highlights the work to make is splendid in design.
In India there are lots of designers who offer a good collection of Lehenga cholis. After all it is Indian Traditional Dress and people have lot of choices.
