A Brief History & Explanation Of Hammers

Hammers are regarded as the oldest tools in existence, and they were probably the technology with which other tools were first crafted. The oldest hammer we know of was very probably worked with about 2-1/2 million years ago to fashion ancient knives or spear heads. Happily, now we are able to shop for our knives and use the hammers for nails, chisels and occasionally a wayward thumb. The three very common types of hammers are discussed in this article, along with an example of specific products. Be sure to check out the Air Wrench.

A claw hammer is intended just for hammering nails into objects. Now and then, the claw end may be employed to take out nails that were incorrectly pounded in by some other guy. The head on your claw hammer is manufactured out of fairly brittle steel, therefore those hammers won’t be made for metalwork. However, they work well against wood, drywall and the other guy’s thumb. Also, be sure not to miss the Air Grinders.

Stanley has a properly designed 16 oz claw hammer with a fiberglass handle which may look incredibly cool in your toolbox. The high-visibility yellow handle will be easy to see in your toolbox, and the fiberglass material and textured rubber make it easy on your hand, while the treated steel head makes it brutal on fasteners.

Ball-peen hammers are set apart from claw hammers seeing as they use a round strike surface and don’t have a claw-end. This type of hammer is employed in metalworking situations for jobs like tapping punches and chisels with the needed force to carve metal. Less commonly, it has been used to form sheet metal if the proper machinery is unavailable. As a result of the way ball peen hammers are employed, they are not very likely to flatten thumbs, yet knuckles are sometimes collateral damage. Klein Tools, Inc. designs a 12.5 inch ball peen hammer produced with a high-carbon steel head. The quality-made hickory handle gives extra force to the strike and is amply resilient for years of whacking stuff.

A sledgehammer is made with a large head, flattened on each end and is therefore much heavier than the other two types of hammers. Sledgehammers are engineered to inflict more force than the smaller hammers and are not very concerned with accuracy. These hammers are normally used for driving fence posts and are especially useful for demolition of many materials. Pony has a 10-pound sledgehammer attached to a yard-long fiberglass handle which ensures the impact is concentrated on the object, rather than the person employing this hammer. The steel head is tempered for durability, and the strike surfaces as well as the sides are protected to inhibit rust.

Hammers are very old and very handy tools. They are made to be used for driving, flattening, penetrating, and occasionally for fragmenting. No self respecting tool box ought to be seen without at least a few of these versatile tools. Incidentally, they are absolutely not designed for thumbs, wrists or other body parts, so be certain that other guy keeps his paws out of your path.
