Why do so many Christians and atheists think that the homophobia issue is primarily Old Testament?
I often see statements and questions concentrating on the homophobic bits of Leviticus, Deuteronomy and sometimes the story of Sodom, as if homophobia is absent from the New Testament. This would make sense if Judaism was the issue here, but in general the contrast is between certain Christians and anti-homophobic atheists rather than homophobic followers of Judaism and anti-homophobic people opposed to the precepts of orthodox Judaism. So, why is it that so many people think it's somehow just linked to the Torah when there are several passages in the New Testament which are often interpreted as homophobic, for instance Romans 1:26, 1 Corinthians 6:9 and Jude 1:7? Gay-bashing certainly doesn't appear to be confined to the Old Testament: not eating shellfish or wearing mixed fibres clearly is.
