Is there a name for people that won't make repairs or maintain anything they own?
I'm talking about people that have the money to make the repairs but refuse to spend the money. They just continue using broken things or go without them. Is there a name for this behavior or personality? Something besides "cheap" and "lazy". And also is there any psychological reason why people might do this?
Tightwad, comes to mind. I think people get this way if they fear loosing money. If they lived during the depression they tend to fear spending money and are afraid of loosing the money they have. It could also be someone who grew up poor. Maybe martyr is the word you are looking for. My step father was that way, he couldn't stand anything new. If I bought my mother something new, he would return it to the store, get a refund, buy her something cheap and used and then keep the rest of the money. I have a word for him, but I can't type it without getting a violation notice. He was raised dirt poor, so I assume that is why he was that way.
