A doctor discusses what the beginning was like for doctors in that region in a documentary about a developed city. Strangely enough, a doctor was the first white man to enter the city. As part of an expedition to explore the area and community, this particular doctor was merely passing through the region. Of course, he didn't find enough customers to support a practice, so he returned to his home where the larger population allowed him to have a lucrative practice.
There were a number of doctors in the area then, but it was difficult for them to earn a living in the sparsely setting region where people had little extra money to spend on medical treatment. With the onset of the Civil War, they gathered their medical equipment together and moved out. Doctors in this locale in the 1800's were referred to as the best under-appreciated heroes of their day. Back then, it took a lot of determination in order for a young man to become a doctor. The uncertainty of making any money at their profession, and working non-stop, regardless of time of day or year, faced those who chose to become physicians. There were some patients who could afford to pay, but the majority of them could not.
There were very few nights which did not bring a sick call in the early morning hours. The poor doctor, and any nearby neighbors who were asleep, would awaken to sounds of stomping feet on his porch as well as a frantic pounding on the door. In the chilly night hours, the exhausted doctor would have to saddle up his horse or prepare his buggy, for a trip to the home of the afflicted. Patients did not always pay their bill in traditional money. Frequently, the patients had to settle their debt with corn or other produce or by performing labor for the doctor. Some of the more industrious doctors chose to open their own drugstores for extra income. The first doctor to have the idea opened the first drugstore on the main street in the city. Three more physicians quickly followed suit. As more and more hospitals were built in these sparsely populated regions,better conditions and pay increased substantially for these hard working doctors. Not long after that, a code of conduct and motto were developed that stated that the medical profession has increased greatly the hospital's efficiency and confidence, mostly because of superior knowledge and working facilities.
