Classic Golf Shoes Are Always In Style

We're all about looking hip on the course. We love golf shoes with an unconventional look, a devil-may-care attitude, and a style borrowed from the streets.

But let's face it: Tradition has its place, especially in golf. Imagine Bobby Jones or Ben Hogan in a pair of low-profile, flat-bottomed, faux-leather golf shoes or, gasp, golf sandals. Can't see it, can you?

There's a reason classics become classics.

A pair of calfskin kicks may set you back a bit, but every avid golfer should own a pair of shoes that can be comfortably worn in the stuffiest of settings – even if they do require the occasional buff and shine.

Today, most manufacturers focus strictly on athletic-styled golf shoes. Fortunately, a few understand the enduring appeal of traditional patterns like the saddle oxford. While hewing closely to convention, these brands have updated their top-of-the-line models with subtle, modern touches.

So we tip our Kangol cap to FootJoy, ECCO and Callaway for carrying the traditional golf shoe torch. Here's a quick guide to their current offerings:

FootJoy: FJ Icon (Traditional Line)
MSRP: $250

A nod to FootJoy's rich history, the FJ Icon line is segmented into Traditional, Fashion and Contemporary styles. The Traditional upper blends full-grain leather with calfskin detailing; five snazzy color/style combos are available.

The FJ Icon abounds with 21st-century features, including a Memory Foam tongue and collar, EVA midsole, TPU outsole and 2-year waterproof warranty.

The Traditional FJ Icon is a favorite of tour pros including Angel Cabrera, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and the resurgent Adam Scott, who had the good taste to wear them in Hogan Country while winning the Valero Texas Open.

ECCO: World Class GTX
MSRP: $450

ECCO made a big splash at the Masters when Fred Couples contended in the company's decidedly informal Street Premiere model. But ECCO is better known for its sumptuous, upscale offerings like the World Class GTX.

What appears to be a standard-issue saddle shoe is anything but in ECCO's hands. The World Class GTX's embossed leather uppers are lined with Gore-Tex for superior waterproofing while the insole features a removable, vegetable-tanned leather liner. ECCO prides itself on "out-of-the-box" comfort, meaning break-in time is next to nothing.

Callaway: Tour Brogue
MSRP: $320

These solid-colored, elongated wingtip shoes are notable for sleek, Euro-inspired styling. Available in solid black or dark brown, the Tour Brogue pairs a burnished, full-grain leather upper with comfort-enhancing touches like a TPU outsole and cushioned footbed.

Callaway's Tour Brogue offers a 30-day comfort guarantee and 2-year waterproof warranty.
