Legal or not golf shot ?
While out playing a few practice holes alone,I found myself at the back of the green facing a 45 degree downhill putt just to make the fringe! Then the green if hit would run all the way to the front..... Basically both chipping and putting were nigh on impossible to stop the ball anywhere near the pin.
With the Legend of Seve firmly in my head, I remembered seeing the great man, flick the ball backwards over his head with the back of his ping style putter. To my amazement, and also huge disappointment ( I was playing alone) i sank this trick shot / chip/ putt first attempt.
Is this a legal stroke or not ?
If you mean you did Seve did in the video below, it's not legal.
"The ball must be fairly struck at with the head of the club and must not be pushed, scraped or spooned." (Rule 14-1)
There are two parts of this rule:
1. You have to hit the ball with the head of the club. You can use either side of the club face, or the heel or the toe. It doesn't matter as long as you use the clubhead. You're OK on that one.
2. You have to strike at the ball. This means the club has to hit the ball and propel it forward. Seve picked up the ball with his putter. It is obviously not 'fairly striking at the ball'.
The host in the video even says it's against the rules.
