The park encompasses 333,000 acres and ranges from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa, at 13,677 feet. Offering 150 miles of hiking trails through dry deserts, volcanic craters, lava fields and dripping rainforests, the park is positioned just 30 miles southwest of Hilo. It includes a museum, petroglyphs, walk-through lava tubes, active steam vents and two live volcanoes: Mauna loa, which last erupted in 1984 and Kilauea, which has been erupting continuously since January 3, 1983. Since 1984, the original hiking excursion company, Hawaiian Walkways, has been operating on Big Island. Dr. Hugh Montgomery, owner and founder, is a constant hiker, an enthusiastic student and mentor of all things Hawaiian. A longtime resident of Big Island, he has achieved national recognition for his advocacy on behalf of its ancient and historic trails. Even with all of his guides who are CPR and First Aid Certified, knowledgeable, experienced and friendly trip leaders trained directly by himself, Dr. Hugh still leads hiking trips himsself.

Rob Pacheco started Hawaii Forest and Trail in 1994, and his prior profession was naturalist on the mainland. The company has become successful enough to have a staff of over twenty-five, a fleet of over fifteen customized vehicles, and a retail store. Most of this is thanks to Rob's enthusiasm for sharing the natural world of Hawaii and its unique ecosystems. While helping to preserve Hawaii's endangered environment by guiding others and spreading his enthusiasm for natural history, Rob's original vision never dies.

Polynesian Adventure Tours provides a relaxed, narrated Volcano Adventure tour by bus. They feature a ‘sky walk’ over the lava flow that smothered the village of Kalapana in the 1980s. Thereis also a short walk to the most recently accessible black sand beach above lava flows, where in the same place was ocean not long ago.
