Tips for Buying a Digital Camera
Not so many years ago, only the wealthy could afford a good camera. Most of us were content with a point-and-shoot model. But that changed when electronics and digital cameras became available to the public. Now for the same price you can get a camera with features we only dreamed about before. And we can make our own prints or share electronic versions of the pictures with others. In fact, most can afford a camera with features far more sophisticated than they need. Here is a checklist to use when buying a camera.
First, determine what is your purpose in buying a camera? Will it be to take pictures to post online? Will they be outdoor or more indoor pictures, needing a flash? Are you going to take mostly still pictures or sporting events? Will the conditions be standard or unique, like night pictures or extreme close-ups?
Next, determine how much you are willing to pay for a camera. For the most part you will get what you pay for. However, you could get a lot more camera than you need. Thus, don’t skip any points above. If you are a photography novice or technologically challenged, you will not want a complicated, multi-feature camera with abilities you will never use. Instead, look for a less expensive simple model of some kind.
Cameras are often featured for how many megapixels they have. This megapixel figure simply tells the maximum resolution it can take. A larger number means that you can set the camera to take larger pictures that are still very clear. However, these pictures may also take up lots of memory. If your main plan is to email pictures, or upload them onto a family website, then such huge pictures will take inordinate amounts of time to upload and for them to download.
Most digital cameras have an LCD screen so you can see what you are taking and what you have already taken. Be sure this is large enough to see clearly and clear enough to see even in bright light. The lens size will usually determine its zoom ability. The larger the camera, the better the flash, generally. Just remember that if you zoom in to a distant object indoors, the flash will probably not be able to illuminate it sufficiently. Some cameras contain a flash boot so you can use a larger external flash . Generally the larger the camera is, the less portable it is, but the better the lens and flash.
More pricey cameras will have additional features like the ability to self-portrait (delay shutter). Some LCD screens can even be flipped out and rotated so that you can see it with the camera over the head or down low or even when setting up a delay shutter picture. Many digital cameras take limited video.
Check online reviews of the camera you are interested in before you set your heart on getting it. Unbiased reviewers and owners are usually pretty honest. Find out what type of batteries it uses. Be sure they are standard AA or AAA batteries or else batteries could be expensive. Also check the memory card to see if it is the same style as other devices you own. Is it compatible with your printer and/or computer?
As I said, check consumer reviews, but also, if possible, go to a store where you can try it out, even if you don’t buy it there. Check out the warranty. Should you purchase the extended warranty? For electronics, I generally do, for too much can go wrong and few will know how to fix it if it malfunctions.
Once you buy it, don’t keep reading the ads. Be content with your purchase instead of wishing you had gotten something else. Rather, get to know it by reading the manual and using it often. Photography is a wonderful means of conserving memories. There is no reason to delay checking out just what camera is right for you.
Following these tips should lead you to a camera that will serve you well for years. But if you're more interested in a professional handling your photography, consider the services of Del Haven Studio, an accomplished Virginia Beach Wedding Photographer. View their website portfolio for proof.
