Bounce Goes The Wedge
How many times have we walked into a golf store to buy a wedge and just asked for a gap wedge, sand wedge or lob wedge. We might get adventurous and ask for a 50 degree, 54 degree or even a 58 degree. We will pick it up, go to the counter, buy it and think that we just made a great purchase. However, in the whole process do we ever think of bounce? Now bounce doesn't mean we hold the wedge up, drop it on the ground to see how high it will bounce in the air. So, if bounce doesn't mean that then what does bounce mean when someone talks about low, standard or high bounce? First, let's define bounce.
Bounce, or bounce angle, is an indication of how much the sole or bottoms most part of the club head lifts the leading edge. A high bounce angle indicates that the leading edge of the sole of the club is lifted higher off the ground, whereas a club with little or no bounce allows the leading edge to contact the ground without interference. A low bounce has a streamlined profile, and the sharp leading edge of the club will tend to cut into the ground easier. With this in mind, if your home course turf is hard and firm sand in the traps, then a wedge with less bounce could be right for you. It will allow the wedge to cut into the turf or sand trap with less resistance.
However, if your home course turf is soft and the sand traps are fluffy then a higher bounce could be right for you. The higher bounce will help prevent the club from digging too deeply into the turf and causing the never wanted "fat shot."
There's another consideration. You need to know your swing. Are you a digger or picker? If you are a digger, a steeper or more upright swing-then a wedge with a little more bounce could be beneficial because it will prevent the club from digging too deep into the ground on the downswing. On the other hand, if you are a picker you may choose a flatter, more sweeping swing, then this wedge with less bounce could be beneficial. This will help avoid skidding off the ground and making contact with the middle of the ball, better known as skulking the ball.
Different wedge maker's code their clubs differently, so let's look at a couple of them. Cleveland wedges go by the dot system. One dot for low bounce, two dots for standard bounce and three dots for high bounce. The degree of bounce will varies depending on the loft of the club but the principle stays the same. The Cleveland wedges starts at 46 degrees of loft with 8 degrees of bounce and goes to 64 degrees of loft with 14 degrees of bounce.
Titleist codes their wedges differently. With Titleist wedges when you look at the back of the wedge, you will see 48.08. What this means is that it has 48 degrees of loft with 8 degrees of bounce. Again, the bounce principle stays the same. With Titleist, the Vokey design spin mill wedges range from 48 degrees with 8 degrees of loft to 64 degrees of loft with 7 degrees of bounce. With Titleist the 54.08, 54.14, 56.08, 56.14, 58.04, 58.12, 60.04 and 60.10 are available in right hand only. With Cleveland it will depend on whether you are looking at the black pearl or the oil quench and satin chrome as to its availability in right hand and left hand.
The thing to remember is not how high it bounces off the ground but rather the type of turf and whether you are a picker or digger as to which bounce would be best for you.
