Are you good with excel?
This is what I need to do: "Using the Excel Data Analysis tool (each team member should install the Excel Data Analysis tool on their PC first) and the schools.xls data set to pull a simple random sample of size n=30, n=50, n=70. Discuss in your team why every sample drawn is unique."
Can anyone explain how I go about doing this in excel so I can complete the exercise? (It's a discussion question, not a test question.)
If the information in schools.xls is in more than one column (if the info includes the school name in one column, # of students in another, etc...) choose one value that doesn't have repeats. School name would be a good choice.
Isolate that information in one column, copy and paste if needed.
In the column directly to the right of your schools info, in the top cell, enter the follwing:
=rand()
That will put a rand number between zero and one in that cell. Double click on the box at the bottom right of the higlight to copy the formula down all of your data. Then, choose the data menu, and sort...
sort by the columnwith your rand om numbers, either ascending or descending. Then take the first 30, 50, or 70. In order to preserve randomness, after each set, hit f9 to refresh the random numbers and sort again.
Hope that's clear.
To be fair, the answer below this one is a bit simpler. At the bottom of the tools menu, select Data Analysis. Scroll down until you see sampling. Drag a box over the schools info, select random, and put n in for the number of samples.
Can't win 'em all.
