Your Guide To Activity Holidays : Preparing Yourself
In this part of our guide to activity holidays we look at organizing yourself prior to going on an activity holiday.
Being prepared when you are planning on activity holidays almost guarantees that you will have a great time! Depending on what type of activity you will be doing, you should make sure that you are both mentally and physically fit, as well as prepared for every eventuality.
Your physical activities should include a sport or exercise that will condition your body and should be done several times a week. As your holiday draws closer, increase the aerobic intensity level and duration and become comfortable with doing a workout two days in a row, as you probably will not get any days to rest while you are gone.
Specific practicing for some activities (such as whitewater rafting or caving) might not be possible, but you can prepare specifically for others (such as rock climbing or skiing). If the type of activity you are planning to do on your holiday isn't readily accessible, it is always a good rule of thumb to take up hiking with a backpack and biking.
You'll be provided with a detailed list of gear and clothing to take and should ensure that you have every item on that list as it was created by an expert who knows exactly what you'll need. Along with what your guide tells you is required for your holiday, you should also take a few small bags, like a backpack and a fanny pack, that will carry all of your personal necessities; larger bags will be cumbersome and might slow you down.
Take clothing that is functional, like shirts and pants that can be zipped off and are made out of material that offers UV protection. You should also carry a second pair of shoes (just in case), a rain suit like "Frog Togs" that can be rolled up, a multi-functional jacket with a built in layering system and a good hat that can offer wind and sun protection. Swimwear and sunglasses are the only other items you might need.
Check if you'll need a sleeping bag, small pillow, ground pad, tent and possibly cooking equipment, food and cutlery. You can sometimes rent these items from the activity holiday company if you don't already have them. Your guide or instructor will carry a first aid kit for the group, but it is recommended that you take your own with you containing aspirin, bandages, insect repellent and other basics.
